IT444C: Quiz Works Lesson Plan
Lesson Objective:

Given any addition math fact (0-10) the student will write an accurate word problem for that fact.

Lesson Goal:

Math EALRs:

1.1: The student will understand and apply concepts and procedures from number sense.

2.3: The student uses mathematics to define and solve problems by constructing solutions.

Lesson Opening:

SAY: "Lately we have been working on our math facts. Today we are going to learn how to turn those math facts into word problems. By the end of this lesson you will be able to write an accurate word problem for any addition math fact. As a review let’s play a game with addition facts."

Break up class into 3 teams and play Side Keys game that reviews math facts.

Example problems for math facts game:

1+1= ? a)2 b)11 c)3 d)1

5+1= ? a)4 b)51 c)7 d)6

2+3= ? a)23 b)5 c)6 d)1

7+2= ? a)9 b)5 c)72 d)4

Lesson Body :

   1. WRITE: 1+1= 2
   2. SAY: "We all know that this means one plus one equals two."
   3. DRAW: a picture of one apple plus one apple equals two apples.
   4. SAY: "We also know that this picture means the same as this number problem (one plus one equals two). We can also write this addition fact as a story instead of using numbers or objects.
   5. SAY: "This picture says one apple plus another apple equals two apples. Listen as I say this problem another way. John has 1 apple and Alice gives him 1 more. How many apples does John have now? [Pause] John has 2 apples."
   6. SHOW: Overhead of this story problem. Underline "John has one apple," "Alice gave him 1 more," and "John has 2 apples."
   7. SAY: "This word problem means the same as the number problem and the picture problem."
   8. SAY: "Watch and listen as I do another one."
   9. WRITE: 5+4= 9 WRITE and
  10. SAY: "Mary has 5 cupcakes and she buys 4 more. How many cupcakes does Mary have now? [Pause] Mary has 9 cupcakes."
  11. SAY: "Okay now let’s try one together."
  12. WRITE: 3+4= 7
  13. Call on student’s to construct a problem with this fact. Do a few more until students are comfortable with it.

Partner Work:

SAY: "With the person sitting next to you think of an addition fact and write a word problem for that fact. Write the math fact and word problem on a piece of paper. Raise your hand when you’re finished and I will come check your work

Individual Practice :

When groups finish work give each student a math fact to work on by themselves. Monitor individual’s work to make sure everyone knows how to write a story problem.

When everyone has finished draw student’s attention back up front.

SAY: "I am going to give each one of you an addition fact. I want you to make a word problem for that fact but instead of writing just correct answer I want you to write the right answer and three wrong answers. I want you to do this because I am going to put each one of your word problems together to make a game like the addition fact game we played at the beginning of the lesson."

Preparing for and Playing the QuizWorks Game:

Once the students have turned in their story-problems load the QuizWorks game into the computer. The software will lead you through setting up a QuizWorks game. To create the story problem game enter each of the student’s word problem and their answers when the program tells you to create questions. Once all the questions and answers have been entered save the game and you’re done with that part.

To play, divide the students into 3 groups. You may want to have each group designate a group captain who will be the person in charge of working the buzzer.
